Lovers of the Past
What is it about a gentleman that makes us sigh? Perhaps it’s the melody of their impeccable speech or the pride in their perfectly groomed appearance. Maybe it’s the way they placed honor above all allowing you to accept just their words in their promises. Or perhaps it’s in their manners; the chivalrous commodity that comes so naturally.
“What manner of man is he?”
“He’s quite the handsome devil and he has away about him that simply alluring.”
Men of the past are often portrayed in many books and movies today due to our love for them. From Prince Leopold Mountbatten Duke of Albany from the movie Kate and Leopold, William Wallace (he was a real person) of Braveheart and the well known and well loved Mr. Darcy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, we seek men who represents our deepest desires of love.
While it’s true that they no longer make men the same, gentlemanly behavior can be learned and easily taught from childhood. As a late twenty something single woman in today’s world, I understand the struggle of finding a man that makes you feel just right. The dating and hookup culture of today’s generations have ruined dating and relationship for many. It doesn’t come as surprise that women today love the idea of men from the old life; men from the past. A lot of women love their independence and a lot of them will also admit they’d love a man who would sweep them off their feet. This romantic side of us draws us to men from the past, men we think we can only find in books and movies.
But though the fashion and language has changed, chivalry isn’t dead. It comes in different forms and manners nowadays but the intention is the same. We just need to open our eyes to see them.
And yes, this issue of Jone Loves was completely inspired by Pride and Prejudice.
