Describing a Social Problem
For my topic, I chose to do gender discrimination. Gender discrimination takes many forms; including sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination, and unequal pay for women who do the same jobs as men. In the US, and many counties, gender discrimination plays a large role in the economy and religious and spiritual beliefs. Gender based differences, the cultural characteristics linked to male and female that define people as masculine and feminine (Harrison, 2014), is what feeds this problem. Unfair treatment and standards for both genders create negative feelings, views and sometimes hostile environment. The media plays an important role in feeding and eventually, the removal of gender inequality.
Today, it is a fact that women still work in typical women’s occupations and men in typical men’s occupations but major headways have been made in regards gender roles (Sănduleasa, 2015). The federal acceptance of gay marriages has moved progress for gender inequality by sticking gender biases. Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law in October legislation clarifying the definition of “gender” in California. The law, AB 887, makes it clear that discrimination on the basis of gender identity and “gender expression” is prohibited (NA, N.D. Group and Gender Approaches to Learning…). With federal laws striking down marriage inequality for gay couple, gender discrimination can soon be an obsolete issue because of the acceptance of gender preference.
